I am not an American sports follower, when did the long pants become the thing, I like the high socks thing, more baseball.

It’s totally personal preference on the part of the player. For example here’s the Orioles’ Manny Machado and Adam Jones recently:

I don’t think Starfleet would tolerate whatever is going on with the back of those pants.

It kind of started in the ‘80s. Since a lot of college and minor league teams still require high socks for everyone, being able to wear them long in the MLB got to be seen as something of a status symbol for the players that made it. It’s all personal preference though, some of them still go with the traditional look.

I am not one to follow sports regularly, however it was on the television at the restaurant I was at. The fact that it reminded me of Star Trek speaks for itself.

Some still do wear the high socks. It’s all just a matter of personal preference. Like in hockey they have different presences on how the players tuck their jerseys
